Overview

University of Minnesota Duluth's (UMD) B.F.A. in Art Education provides students with the aesthetic and pedagogical training necessary not only to be effective K-12 art teachers, but also to engage in shaping the future of arts in education. The program includes experience in a range of art studio areas and art history, in addition to courses in arts education methodology. Grounded in the belief that teachers learn best by doing, field experience is central to the program, which includes arranged teaching in area elementary classrooms as well as in public and private agencies, in addition to extensive supervised student teaching. Students interested in the teaching of art may pursue K-12 art teaching licensure through this major, offered in cooperation with the College of Education and Human Services Professions. Students apply for admission to the licensure program and complete the courses required by the State Department of Education and the Board of Teaching. UMD's deliberate merging of Art and Design in one department stimulates and provokes students as independent thinkers and creators who explore various media and methods. Distinguished faculty continue to create, exhibit, and publish research regularly, in addition to teaching and providing mentorship and career guidance. UMD Art and Design is accredited by NASAD, the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. UMD's fine arts area has two state-of-the-art lab spaces for use by students in conjunction with faculty research: the interdisciplinary Visual and Digital Imaging Lab (Viz Lab) and the Motion + Media Across Disciplines Lab (MMAD Lab), which offers students opportunities in 3D motion capture and high definition video production. Acquired Skills A study of art develops: self awareness cultural awareness communication skills creative problem solving critical thinking the practice of incorporating feedback to improve work Career Possibilities The B.F.A. in Art Education leads to a license to teach art in Minnesota, Kindergarten-12th grade. OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.

About the Institution

On April 2, 1895 Minnesota Governor David. M. Clough signed legislation approving the creation of the State Normal School at Duluth. Eight years later, in 1903, seven women graduated with teaching degrees. In 1921, the Normal School became the Duluth State Teacher’s College and in 1947, the Teacher's College was named the Duluth Branch of the University of Minnesota. Today, the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is a mid-sized comprehensive regional university that offers students a supportive atmosphere and access to the resources of the larger University of Minnesota system.
