Overview

Students in the film studies program will have the unique opportunity to create films in collaboration with their peers. Students will study films from their origins to the present, and from around the world that embody different forms: popular, experimental, documentary, animation and more. University Of Manitoba courses cover production processes such as direction, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound and acting, providing students with both foundational and specific skill sets. As the major art form of the twentieth century, film is at the centre of a liberal arts education. The ideas about the past, the present, the future and about the differences between here and there are often cinematic. One of the best ways to understand the world and better prepare ourselves to cope with its complexities is through the study of film. The department offers courses covering a wide range of periods, genres, media and theoretical approaches.
