Overview

Western Michigan University offers a major in communication studies for students who want to deepen their understanding of written, spoken and electronic communication. The program's open, integrative approach is a good fit for you if you plan to pursue graduate studies, or if you're undecided or want flexibility in choosing an area of specialization. As a communication studies student at WMU, you'll take courses in mass media, corporate and organizational communication, interpersonal relationships, group dynamics, and leadership and social influence. WMU offers communication-related student organizations as general as the communication studies degree, and as specific as you want to get. The Public Relations Organization provides opportunities in corporate and organizational communication, event planning, promotions, media relations and other functions of the public relations profession. WIDR, the campus radio station, and the Western Herald, WMU's student newspaper, will keep students on top of campus information and events. They're also known well beyond campus for providing students with tremendous real-world experience through high-profile positions.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
