Overview

Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) is a professional degree program that prepares graduates for careers in architecture practice. The program balances foundational disciplinary skills with creative design experimentation, fostering innovative solutions that address societal and environmental challenges in the built environment. A core component of the program is the completion of a design thesis, where students synthesize social, environmental, and technical considerations through informed design practice. This thesis is supported by coursework that broadens students’ technical and theoretical understanding of design and related topics. Students develop a personalized curriculum in close collaboration with a faculty advisor, tailoring their educational experience to their interests and career goals. While architecture and engineering typically follow separate educational paths leading to different licensure in the United States, there is a growing convergence in the knowledge and skills vital to both fields. Addressing global challenges such as climate change and energy sustainability increasingly requires professionals proficient in both architectural and engineering principles. The professional M.Arch. program at WPI is designed for students passionate about integrating architectural creativity with engineering insights to meet these pressing needs.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
