Overview

The Master of Arts in Applied Social Psychology program is structured to provide an integrated, comprehensive curriculum that prepares graduates for careers demanding extensive knowledge and expertise in the complex interplay between social factors and human behavior. The program focuses on examining how social influences, social perception, and social interaction affect the health and well-being of individuals, groups, and communities. Its mission is to offer students with a background in psychology the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and competency in applied social psychology. Participants learn how thoughts, feelings, and actions are shaped by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. The program provides a solid foundation in areas such as social cognition, social identity, social influence, group dynamics, and interpersonal relationships. The core curriculum includes topics such as attribution, persuasion, self-concept, implicit bias and prejudice, conformity, bullying and aggression, and explores how these factors impact individual, group, and societal well-being. Applications to areas such as criminal activity, substance abuse, and domestic abuse are also examined. In addition, the program aligns with institutional learning outcomes that emphasize a digital mindset, collaboration and problem-solving, and proficiency in big data analytics. Through the study of these topics, students learn to relate and apply their understanding of the fundamental principles of the discipline to contemporary issues and challenges. The purposeful integration of curriculum elements enables them to apply foundational concepts in the field to real-world problems. Multiple group and peer teaching opportunities are built into the program, allowing students to develop team-based communication and collaboration skills—essential competencies in careers in social psychology. Ultimately, students cultivate intellectual curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning, both of which contribute to their long-term professional success.
