Overview

The Master of Music - Conducting program offers students affordability and flexibility with several specialization choices and multiple thesis/non-thesis tracks to customize their plan of study. The University of South Dakota offers the only master's of music degrees in the state, and the program has been accredited though NASM since 1956 and by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The program provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to become a professional musician. Students can increase their technical skills and gain the advanced theoretical knowledge necessary for a career in the conducting field with a master's degree in conducting. They will have the option to focus on conducting specifically in the choral or instrumental realm, or take a mixture of both concentrations. This program prepares them for advanced level K–12 ensemble teaching or for doctoral work in various musical areas.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
