Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in English major allows students to explore literary works and cultural productions in past and current eras. They take courses that reflect the breadth of literature in English and can choose from varied electives to pursue a more specific interest. Foundations in literary criticism and American and British literature courses combine with further studies in course topics such as African American literature, the graphic novel, Shakespeare, and women writers of the nineteenth century. A creative writing specialization allows an English major to extend the tradition of strong and imaginative creative storytellers, poets and creative non-fiction writers who have honed their skills at the University of South Dakota. Faculty include novelists, poets, short-story writers and a South Dakota Poet Laureate. Students work in small, intimate classes on their own imaginative writing while also gaining a firm grounding in literature and literary criticism.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
