Overview

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.S.) at USC Upstate enables students to design a degree tailored to specific career goals and interests. Whether combining fields such as business and IT or developing diverse skills in areas like nonprofit management and communications, the program prepares graduates for a wide range of professional opportunities. The program offers flexibility, allowing students to create a customized curriculum based on academic and career objectives. Coursework may span two different areas or focus on a single specialization. Students gain practical experience through internships in fields such as nonprofit administration, communications, and public safety, and may pursue independent study projects under faculty guidance. The B.I.S. program accommodates a wide range of students, from incoming freshmen and transfers to working professionals, supporting academic and career development at all stages. Students who transfer with an AA or AS degree from a regionally accredited technical or community college, or who have completed general education requirements at an accredited baccalaureate institution, are considered to have fulfilled the general education requirements for the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
