Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at USC Upstate equips students to bridge cultures, enhance communication, and build meaningful connections. Graduates are prepared for in-demand roles across sectors such as health care, education, business, and government. The growing need for Spanish translators and interpreters provides strong job security. Alumni with a degree in Spanish from USC Upstate have gone on to join the Peace Corps, work as translators and interpreters, and become certified teachers. Small class sizes provide personalized attention from faculty and opportunities to practice Spanish. Service learning, internships, and study abroad experiences offer additional ways to apply language skills in real-world contexts. The program develops strong communication abilities while fostering a deep understanding of Hispanic and Latino cultures and cross-cultural connections. Students may pursue a double major to complement the Spanish degree or add a minor in translation and interpreting to gain professional expertise. Engagement with organizations such as the Latin American Student Association and the Alpha Mu Gamma National Honor Society, along with participation in the annual Translation and Interpreting Conference, further enriches the learning experience.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
