Overview

The English program at USC Upstate develops critical thinking, communication, and writing skills, preparing students for a wide range of careers. The program emphasizes literature, creative writing, and professional communication, and is offered both online and on-campus. Graduates may pursue careers as writers or editors for print publications, digital outlets, business, government, or nonprofits, or explore roles in libraries, film production, social media, marketing, and higher education. The program also provides strong preparation for graduate studies or law school. Students undertake research projects under faculty guidance or complete internships in editing or social media. Specializations include literature, film, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and professional writing. Courses cover digital writing, grant proposal composition, and other career-focused skills. Small class sizes and faculty mentorship ensure personalized learning. Students study diverse authors and languages across a variety of courses. The program’s flexibility allows transfer credits to count toward the major and accommodates individual interests. Graduates apply critical thinking, analytical, communication, writing, and research skills across careers in education, nonprofits, libraries, media, public relations, business, and beyond.
