Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Communications at USC Upstate prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities by developing skills in analysis, critical thinking, writing, and speaking. Graduates gain a broad understanding of the field and the ability to express ideas effectively across multiple platforms. Graduates are prepared for careers in journalism, marketing, advertising, social media management, public relations, corporate communications, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies. The degree also provides a strong foundation for law school or advanced graduate studies. The curriculum emphasizes effective oral and written communication, research skills, and the use of emerging technologies to share information. Students may explore related subjects such as film, marketing, or journalism. Courses in communication studies promote responsible communication, critical thinking, and engagement with issues of social justice, environmental awareness, and equity. Several courses examine how race, class, gender, and sexuality influence experiences and perceptions within organizations, the environment, and national or international public communication. The concentration in mass media focuses on the production, consumption and theoretical analysis of media messages within the context of the evolving fields of journalism and mass communication. The curriculum encourages students to become critical thinkers and mass media practitioners utilizing foundational print and broadcast journalistic practices as well as new media technologies. In addition, students are exposed to hypothetical and real-world situations that challenge them in problem solving, creativity, ethics and mass communication history and theory.
