Overview

The Biology program at USC Upstate provides a broad foundation in the natural world and the diversity of life on Earth. Students may choose between a B.A., suitable for those pursuing a double major, or a B.S., designed for those aiming to attend graduate school or work in advanced health-related fields. The program also offers opportunities to participate in paid summer research on campus under faculty mentorship. The curriculum explores the diversity of plant and animal life and delves into cellular and molecular biology to understand the building blocks of life. Students engage in faculty-mentored research and may pursue a pre-med track if preparing for medical school. Students gain experience presenting research and preparing posters for regional and national conferences. Opportunities include pre-medical summer internships and participation in USC Upstate’s Er(UP)t program, a paid, faculty-mentored summer research initiative. Field trips provide hands-on study of the local environment. The program develops critical thinking, analytical, and research skills essential for the growing biological sciences sector. Graduates are prepared for careers in biotechnology, health care, environmental science, and related fields, while the Er(UP)t program enhances graduate school applications and professional resumes through practical research experience.

OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical.
