Overview

On this degree, students will have the opportunity to act like a lawyer from the start, gaining the key legal skills required in the ‘law in practice’ environment. The best preparation for the legal profession is to think like a lawyer from day one. The practice-based approach means students will learn to understand the law in the context of everyday life and legal practice, and apply their learning in a number of ways. This law degree has been designed by experienced academics and practitioners, with input from the University of Roehampton's internationally-renowned Crucible Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice. It is designed specifically to focus on their career development. Throughout this degree, students will work with practitioners from the legal sector. Students will gain the practical experience of putting law into action through the University of Roehampton's pro bono activities at the Law Clinic and the Citizens' Advice Bureau and have the opportunity to go on work placements. From the start, students will be encouraged to engage with legal issues and reflect on what they learn as an integral part of their experience. A high proportion of their time will be spent working face to face with tutors and developing their understanding of legal issues, particularly the core skills and competencies legal practitioners are expected to have. Students will develop an understanding of the different areas of law-making and legal practice by visiting the historic courts of central London. This year, students have observed cases in the Supreme Court, visited other courts and tribunals as part of the Law in Practice module, and are also visiting the Houses of Parliament. Modules currently available include Legal Systems, Ethics and Skills, which covers the structure and function of the English legal system; Public Law and Human Rights, which explores civil liberties and human rights; and the Law in Practice modules in year one, focusing on legal communication, and in year two, on business and commercial awareness. The University of Roehampton's dedicated Law Careers Advisor has established links with graduate recruiters and can give students ideas and tips to help them gain a good graduate job. Together, students will map out their aptitudes and create a career plan. The University of Roehampton also provides personalised sessions in CV and application writing, presentations, mock interviews and commercial-awareness training, as well as giving students opportunities to develop their networking skills. This Law degree is ranked 1st in the UK for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2022).

About the Institution

The University of Roehampton is a modern university located in south-west London, near the affluent and picturesque Richmond. Students can enjoy living and learning on a beautiful green campus whilst making the most of all the leisure, cultural, sporting, and networking opportunities London has to offer. The university evolved from four teacher training colleges, the first of which, Whitelands College, was established in 1841. The others are Digby Stuart (1874), Froebel College (1892), and Southlands College (1970s), which together make up the now modern campus. In 1975, the four institutions...
