Overview

The department offers a Certificate in Chinese Language and Culture. This certificate is designed to help students develop a foundational understanding of Chinese culture and basic fluency in the language, while being flexible enough to complete as a stand-alone program or combined with a major in another discipline. Learning Chinese both for Career Enhancement and Personal Growth: China has become a huge market, and business leaders are looking for people who can speak Chinese and operate successfully in a Chinese cultural context. China is currently second-largest trading partner, and its economic importance to Canada will only increase. Knowing Chinese may give students an edge when competing for an important position. China is playing an important role in world affairs now and in the future. As China has opened up to the West, there are opportunities for employment in all areas. Students will be able to communicate with 1/5th of the world population, explore a civilization that is over 5000 years old, understand its rich culture and history, and prepare to be a wiser and more informed global citizen.
