Overview

The interdisciplinary Master of Arts (MA) in Cultural Analysis and Social Theory (CAST) is a 12-month program providing a dynamic graduate experience within a close-knit intellectual community. It brings together students from varied academic backgrounds to examine contemporary social and cultural issues while enhancing research and communication skills. The program promotes critical inquiry across disciplines, enabling collaboration with professors from the humanities and social sciences for a deeper understanding of culture and societal challenges. Through coursework and an optional independent research project, students develop critical thinking and analytical skills, expanding their perspectives on contemporary issues and understanding social and cultural forces. The program fosters diverse viewpoints in essential discussions about social justice and welcomes students from various undergraduate disciplines and universities globally, including recent graduates and professionals seeking further education. Professional development in the program colloquium, featuring advanced research workshops, teaching workshops, and research talks by scholars from Laurier and beyond. Involvement in a research group, where students help organize international and local conferences, engage in workshops with visiting scholars, and present their research at student conferences. Support for non-traditional research projects and the creation of new tools to tackle social justice, cultural differences, and social change in a student-centered environment.

About the Institution

For more than a century, Laurier has been known for academic excellence. But we’ve also been dedicated to the philosophy that our students’ success is measured through more than grades – it’s based on the quality of the lives they lead, and those they inspire. Laurier’s two campuses are in Waterloo and Brantford, but we also have a Faculty of Social Work in nearby Kitchener and a weekend MBA program in Toronto. In all, we have 19,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Kitchener-Waterloo, with a population of about 350,000, is small enough to be safe and easy to navigate but large enough to o...
