Overview

Deepen the understanding of teaching and learning in University of Reading's flexible and highly regarded MA Education, developed and delivered by leaders in the field of education. Reading is one of the leading providers for education in the UK, and are ranked 7th in the UK for Education in the Guardian University Guide, 2021. Underpinned by up-to-date research evidence, this course examines the broader philosophical, sociological and psychological aspects and issues related to teaching and learning. This course is designed to meet the needs of busy professionals and to reflect their own interests. Students can opt to study different modules related to various aspects of education to deepen their knowledge and equip them to develop their career in the way that works best for them. Tutors are internationally or nationally renowned, and their research regularly has a direct impact on school curricula and learning techniques — both in the UK and abroad. As experts in their field, their research also directly informs the focus and content of their course, and students will benefit from the breadth of their expertise and backgrounds in educating and influencing policy. Alongside the core modules, students can choose from a range of optional modules which span various topics. They may also select modules to follow a specific pathway, tailoring their degree to their chosen specialism. The available specialisms are: MA Education (Early Years) – Explore research in child development and the wider context of families, communities and educational settings in which young children learn. MA Education (Inclusive Education) – Explore what diversity means for education, and how to make teaching more inclusive by investigating inclusive teaching and learning for all pupils. MA Education (Leadership and Management) – Develop leadership skills by critically examining research-based models of leadership for change in education. MA Education (Music Education) – Advance practice as a creative music teacher by developing creativity, musicianship and leadership through practical activities and music education research. MA Education (Second Language Learning and Teaching) – Examine key issues related to the teaching and learning of second and foreign languages, and investigate how research influences classroom teaching and learning. MA Education (Research Methods) – Study the qualitative and quantitative research methods used in education research in depth. This specialism is only available for students on the SENSS Social Sciences Studentships funded Doctoral Training Partnership.
