Overview

The BSc Bioveterinary Sciences degree at the University of Reading prepares students for a wide range of careers within the animal and veterinary sectors. The programme equips graduates with the scientific expertise and practical experience needed to address key global challenges related to animal health, welfare, and management. Bioveterinary scientists play an essential role in society by supporting sustainability and food security through the care and management of farmed animals, applying scientific methods to improve the welfare and behaviour of domestic and captive animals, and conducting research that bridges animal biology, veterinary science, and animal management. Students at Reading gain in-depth subject knowledge, research skills, and laboratory expertise to respond to these challenges. According to the National Student Survey 2024, 92% of students agreed that teaching staff explained things well, 100% felt the course pushed them to achieve their best work, and 100% believed it developed the knowledge and skills they needed for their future. The Department of Animal Sciences had a 71% response rate from final-year students. The University of Reading is ranked 7th in the UK for Animal Science and Agriculture (Guardian University Guide 2026), reflecting the high quality of its academic provision in this field. The course offers a comprehensive foundation in the biosciences, with a strong focus on animal function from the molecular to the whole-animal level. Core areas of study include cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, animal health and welfare, behaviour sciences, and nutrition. Students learn how to apply this knowledge across diverse settings, including farms, zoos, and domestic environments. In addition to academic and scientific knowledge, the programme emphasises the development of transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, data handling, and statistical analysis—capabilities that are highly sought after by employers across the sector.
