The institution which was to become Augustana College began with the foundation of Hillsboro Academy in Hillsboro, Illinois, in 1835. By 1846, a Scandinavian Lutheran group had changed the name to “The Literary and Theological Institute of The Lutheran Church of the Far West.”
In 2015 the name Augustana College changed to Augustana University.
Inspired by Lutheran scholarly tradition and the liberal arts, Augustana provides an education of enduring worth that challenges the intellect, fosters integrity, and integrates faith with learning and service in a diverse world.
Their academic programs and location in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, are top reasons why students choose Augustana. With over 50 majors and pre-professional programs and a city rich with internship and research opportunities, cultural activities, shopping, dining, and recreation, it’s no surprise that so many international students call Augustana home.
Learn. Play. Live. Stay.: Sioux Falls is South Dakota's largest city, with an estimated population of 202,600 — with 6,750 new residents in 2021. Featuring a robust culture and economy, as well as countless options for adventure, entertainment, food and sought-after internship and clinical opportunities, Sioux Falls is a great place to learn, live, play and stay.
Their thriving campus life is bolstered by the larger Sioux Falls community. A thriving metropolitan center, Sioux Falls is consistently ranked among the best places in America to live thanks to its safety, economy, and variety of industry. Augustana is proud to be part of such a progressive city and tries to give as much to it as it has given to AU. On campus, students and Sioux Falls residents alike will find opportunities for research, athletic competition, and seasonal events such as their annual Viking Days celebration.
Consider the friendships that could be built with classmates from 42 states and 35 countries around the globe. Picture the memories that will be made when involved in intramurals, campus clubs and organizations, the performing and visual arts, student government and campus ministry. Imagine what’s possible when the world is the classroom.

Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical. Eligibility is checked for each program — see the program page.
