About Brenau University

Founded as the Georgia Baptist Female Seminary by Dr. W. C. Wilkes, Brenau University is a non-sectarian, privately owned institution. In 1900, it was named Brenau College, and, in the 1992-1993 academic year, Brenau became a university.

For over a century, Brenau has been governed by eight presidents and has a rich tradition of educating women. Today, the university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and specialists degrees on five campuses throughout Georgia.

Brenau University comprises the Sidney O. Smith Graduate School and the Undergraduate School.

The Women’s College, part of the Undergraduate School, located in Gainesville, has provided excellence in single gender education since 1878.

Brenau University challenges students to live extraordinary lives of personal and professional fulfillment. As students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees or non-degree programs at Brenau campuses and online, each prepares for a lifetime of intellectual accomplishment and appreciation of artistic expression through a curriculum enriched by the liberal arts, scientific inquiry and global awareness.

By 2025, Brenau University will be an internationally recognized leader in innovative higher education with a unique blend of the liberal arts and professional preparation offering advanced degrees in areas that meet the essential needs of the 21st century.

Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical. Eligibility is checked for each program — see the program page.
