About Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC)

Established in 1946 to help train and educate veterans returning from World War II, Mohawk Valley Community College has evolved to become New York State’s first community college, the largest college between Syracuse and Albany, and the region’s primary provider of college education and non-credit training.

As a diverse institution with a global view, Mohawk Valley Community College provides opportunities for affordable education, with support from Oneida County and the State of New York, and offers career, transfer and transitional education, programs for personal and cultural enrichment, and supports community and economic development. At MVCC, students will not find find themselves in overwhelming lecture halls that they might find in larger Universities. Instead, students will notice the difference immediately when they attend their classes. There is a 20 to 1 student faculty ratio in classes. Students will have an academic advisor who they can get to know and trust. MVCC's Rome Campus, located at 1101 Floyd Ave., consists of the John D. Plumley Complex in honor of former Oneida County Executive John D. Plumley, a major proponent of MVCC operating a campus in Rome. This building features modern classroom and meeting spaces, including state-of-the-art labs for Surgical Technology and hospitality programs.

Optional Practical Training (OPT). OPT and STEM OPT eligibility depend on maintaining F-1 status and on the program. A program counts as STEM only when its CIP code is on the official STEM list — not because its name sounds technical. Eligibility is checked for each program — see the program page.
